The Tribe of Issachar

"Issachar is a strong donkey, lying down among sheepfolds. When he saw how good the resting-place and how pleasant the country, he bowed his shoulder to the load and became a slave to forced labour." (Genesis 49:14-15)

Blazon of Arms: Sable between two sheep passant or a Magen David argent all in a bordure purpure.

Jewel: Diamond

Issachar, the ninth son of Jacob and the sixth in order of blessing, fathered the tribe which occupied the land between Mount Tabor and Mount Gilboa, and which contained the towns of Endor and Jezreel. It was bordered to the north by the lands of Zebulun and Naphtali, and on all other sides by those of Manasseh. The Tribe of Issachar became part of the Kingdom of Israel as one of the tribes which seceded from the House of David. It disappeared from history after the Assyrian conquest and the deportation of the Israelites into exile.
