The Honorable Tribe of Levi

"Simeon and Levi are brothers in carrying out their malicious plans. May my soul not enter their council nor my heart join their company, for in their rage they have killed men and hamstrung oxen at their whim. Accursed be their rage for its ruthlessness, their wrath for its ferocity. I shall disperse them in Jacob, I shall scatter them through Israel." (Genesis 49:5-7)

Blazon of Arms: Vert three trumpets mouths to the chief in fess argent.

"And you shall make a plate of pure gold, and engrave on it, like the engraving of a signet, 'Holy to the LORD'." (Exodus 28:36)

"On the following day Moses went to the Tent of Testimony and there, already sprouting, was Aaron's branch, representing the House of Levi; buds had formed, flowers had bloomed and almonds had already ripened." (Numbers 17:23)

Blazon of Arms: Vert three trumpets mouths to the chief in fess argent in chief a bezant.

Crown of David attributes to Aaron and his male-line descendants the Kohanim (priests) the privilege of personal use of the arms of the Tribe of Levi, differenced with a bezant. This represents the disk of pure gold that was set on the turban of the High Priest.

A priest who is not profaned so as to be unfit for Temple service bears arms blazoned as follows: Vert three trumpets mouths to the chief in fess argent in chief a bezant over all on a fess or a pair of hands couped at the wrist and held as in the Priestly (Kohanim) Blessing azure a rod putting forth almonds of the field in pale.

The rod of almonds (Aaron's rod) has traditionally appeared on arms privately attributed to Aaron. The hands positioned as in the Priestly Blessing appeared in the arms of the late Lord Cohen of Birkenhead, where they were blazoned proper, ie. as they would appear in nature.

Nothing stated here implies any right or warrant to bear and use any of the coats-of-arms presented here, unless these have been lawfully granted.

The Levites, named after the third son of Jacob, alone among the tribes of Israel were not given territory of their own. Set apart for service at the Sanctuary and later at the Temple, they were to be supported by tithes from the rest of the people. Aaron, the father of the hereditary Priesthood, was himself a descendant of Levi and both the Levites and the Priests (Kohanim) retain their distinct identities and certain privileges within the Jewish community to this day.
