The Holy Crown of David
"Look, the days are coming, Yahweh declares, when I shall raise an upright Branch for David; he will reign as King and be wise, doing what is just and upright in the country. In his days Judah will triumph and Israel live in safety." (Jeremiah 23:5-6b)
The Holy Crown of David is the Crown of the hereditary title which Our Lord Jesus Christ inherited from His ancestors in His country's Royal Family. Its unequalled antiquity is reflected in the fact that it is a simple gold circlet with no cap of maintenance, and with eight triangular rays, augmented in commemoration of Christ with intertwined iron circlets of thorns and two gold arches set crosswise to support an orb beneath a cross, both also in gold. That the Crown is a Crown of State, not of Coronation, is signified by the fact that the arches slope upwards. The circlets of thorns themselves serve as the Coronation Crown, which Jesus chose to wear as He freely accepted suffering and death for the salvation of sinners.
Since the Crown is that of a King it is open, as distinct from that of an Emperor which is closed. Although the Office of David makes its holder legally the equal of other Sovereigns as to jurisdiction, with the divine right to rule the the Holy Land, they are outranked by Emperors according to precedence of order.
Since Jesus is a King, He would be outranked by an Emperor but for the fact that He has been given all authority in heaven and on earth and, indeed, over death itself and Hades. For this reason the Holy Crown of David contains the circlet of thorns which He freely chose to receive in His Passion, and which now serves as a trophy of His victory which sets His Royal Crown above those of all the rulers of the earth.
The Crown is devoid of jewels, not only because of its sheer antiquity and simplicity, but also because unadulterated gold is associated with the Divine Presence in which the Ark of the Covenant stood, and because the splendour of this Crown is above all in Him who has the right to wear it.
