Born 17 August 1887, Persenbeug Castle, son of Archduke Otto von Habsburg and Archduchess Maria Josepha of Saxony, married Zita (born 9 May 1892, died 14 March 1989) daughter of Duke Robert of Bourbon-Parma and Infanta Maria Antonia of Portugal 21 October 1911; succeeded his great-uncle Francis Joseph as Emperor of Austria 21 November 1916, crowned King of Hungary 30 December 1916, styled:

Blazon of Arms: Tierced per pale dexter or a lion rampant gules armed langued and crowned azure (Habsburg) per pale gules a fess argent (Austria) and sinister or on a bend gules three alerions argent (Lorraine). The shield is ensigned by a Royal Crown without a cap and surrounded by the Collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
