Born 17 August 1887, Persenbeug Castle, son of Archduke Otto von Habsburg and Archduchess Maria Josepha of Saxony, married Zita (born 9 May 1892, died 14 March 1989) daughter of Duke Robert of Bourbon-Parma and Infanta Maria Antonia of Portugal 21 October 1911; succeeded his great-uncle Francis Joseph as Emperor of Austria 21 November 1916, crowned King of Hungary 30 December 1916, styled:

Charles the First, by the Grace of God Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary the Fourth of this Name, King of Bohemia, of Dalmatia, Croatia, Slavonia, Galicia, Lodomeria and Illyria, King of Jerusalem etc., Archduke of Austria, Grand-Duke of Tuscany and Krakow, Duke of Lorraine, of Salzburg, Styria, Carinthia, Carniola and Bucovina; Grand-Duke of Transylvania, Margrave of Moravia, Duke of Upper and Lower Silesia, of Modena, Parma, Piascenza and Quastalla, of Auschwitz and Zator, of Teschen, Friulia, Ragusa and Zara, Princely Count of Habsburg and Tyrol, of Kyburg, Gorizia and Gradisca, Prince of Trent and Brixen, Margrave of Upper and Lower Lusatia and in Istria; Count of Hohenembs, Feldkirch, Bregenz, Sonnenberg, etc., Lord of Trieste, of Cattaro and in the Windish Mark, Grand Voivode of the Voivodeship of Serbia etc. etc., Head and Sovereign of the Austrian Order of the Golden Fleece, Grand Master of the Military Order of Maria Theresia, Grand Master of the Royal Hungarian Order of St Stephen, of the Imperial Austrian Order of Leopold, of the Order of the Iron Crown, of the Imperial Order of Francis Joseph and of the Order of the Knights of St Sebastian in Europe.

Deposed 11 November 1918, died Funchal 1 April 1922

Blazon of Arms: Tierced per pale dexter or a lion rampant gules armed langued and crowned azure (Habsburg) per pale gules a fess argent (Austria) and sinister or on a bend gules three alerions argent (Lorraine). The shield is ensigned by a Royal Crown without a cap and surrounded by the Collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
