The Case for Monarchy

Monarchy is among the most ancient and venerable institutions of government. A monarch, even one who exercises executive and legislative power on his own responsibility, is no mere politician. Politics is a noble and worthy calling - for Man is by nature a "political animal" - and is concerned with deciding for or against this measure or that according to the practical needs of the temporal common good.

Political decisions, necessary though they are for the public welfare, are ultimately sectional - they are almost always decisions over which good men may legitimately disagree. The stability of a political society depends on the willingness of the "losers" in a political debate to abide by the policies decided upon by the majority, even though they may prefer an alternative. Politics cannot, by itself, give a nation the unity it needs in order to be able to conduct it while maintaining the stability of the political society as a whole.

This principle of social unity in a political society is typically provided by the Head of State, who may be either a monarch or the President of a Republic. All other things equal, a monarchy has advantages which cannot easily be replicated by a merely ceremonial Presidency. A King stands above politics and owes no allegiance to any party or group on which he might depend for the funding of an election campaign. A King is able to unite a nation by the fact that he plays no part in the necessary, but divisive, business of politics, that he represents no-one in particular, but is able to stand for values which transcend those which emerge from political debate. A King is not dependent on either the votes or the money of any section of the community.

For it is the law that makes the King, and it is his Coronation and Anointing which set him apart as a sacred figure consecrated for life to the service of his people out of noble duty. It is his special calling to be a father to his people, doing justice to all without fear or favour and acting as the protector and advocate of the poor and the weak who are unlikely to find a voice through the political process. It was the duty of the King in ancient Israel and Judah to declare the cancellation of debts, the release of slaves and the restoration of ancestral lands at the times appointed by God. The Kings of Babylon would do this on special occasions such as the Accession, a Jubilee, a royal wedding or a military victory.

In a Christian society the King has the special role of ensuring that the activities of the State are kept within the limits of divine law. God providentially guarantees the stability of the Throne, which the people in turn offer back to Him in an act of religious homage.

Multinational states which are monarchies, such as the United Kingdom and the Habsburg Empire, tend to be remarkably stable in spite of their ethnic diversity, because the nation is held together not by common ethnic identity, but by common allegiance to the same Crown. A long-reigning monarch has a vast wealth of experience which he can put at the disposal of his ministers who are responsible for political decisions. He can act to moderate the ambitions and the ill-considered measures of unwise politicians, and he can counsel and encourage the less confident. A King and the Royal Family are able to dedicate their lives and the prestige of royalty to charitable and other socially beneficial causes which could not convincingly be patronised by politicians.

Most countries with republican forms of government seek stability in the common ethnic identity of the population. Ethnic identities in ethnically mixed areas can, as we have seen in Yugoslavia and elsewhere in Eastern Europe, all too easily turn into a destructive force which can marginalise ethnic minorities and treat them as suspect in their loyalty to the State. Some countries have been able to avoid this problem through a long tradition of reverence for republican institutions, or for some other special reason. Many of these are indeed well governed as republics, though some would doubt that a republic could remain faithful to God for any length of time.

A priest who is not a monarchist is not worthy to stand at the altar table. The priest who is a republican is always a man of poor faith. God himself anoints the Monarch to be head of the Kingdom, while the President is elected by the pride of the people. The King stays in power by implementing God's Commandments, while the President does so by pleasing those who rule. The King brings his faithful subjects to God, while the President takes them away from God. (Neomartyr Vladimir, Metropolitan of Kiev, tortured and killed by Bolsheviks on 7th February 1918)

A Most Just, Worthy and Merciful King

"Listen to the word of Yahweh, King of Judah now occupying the Throne of David, you, your officials and your people who go through these gates. Yahweh says this: Act uprightly and justly; rescue from the hands of the oppressor anyone who has been wronged; do not exploit or ill-treat the stranger, the orphan, the widow; shed no innocent blood in this place. For if you are scrupulous in obeying this command, then Kings occupying the Throne of David will continue to make their entry through the gates of this palace riding in chariots or on horseback, they, their officials and their people. (Jeremiah 22:2-5)"

Though governed on earth as a secular democratic republic, the nation of Israel, together with the wider Holy Land and all its people, has the unique privilege of having been chosen by God to be the civil patrimony on earth of His own beloved Son. To Him in the Royal Person of David belongs, throughout the Holy Land, what belongs to Caesar elsewhere. Never has there been, never will there ever be, a nation with a King so just, so worthy and so merciful as Jesus, her Lord and Messiah, and its people are not worthy to tread on the soil on which He walked. Though most of His people neither know nor recognise Him, but rather defy Him, the Knesset and the other civil authorities which rule in Israel and elsewhere in the Holy Land do so as His lawful representatives, since they have been instituted by His providence in common with all constituted civil authorities everywhere.

The Holy Land, which should be foremost among the nations in the enjoyment of happiness and peace, is torn apart by divisive ethnic nationalism, hatred, terror, tension and war. It is so because its people do not know Jesus as their Messiah, as the one God whom they are to worship, as their Saviour in whom they are to trust, and as the supreme Lawgiver whom they are to obey. Neither do they know their singular privilege of owning Him also as the Son of David, by hereditary title their national King, to whom they are to render reverence and civil homage, as well as divine worship. They do not recognise His royal dignity in their civil ceremonies. They have no idea that their country has the greatest monarchy the world has ever known.

The Kingdom of Our Lord Jesus Christ is not of this world. He is no rival to the rulers of the nations, since it is by Him that they reign. In Israel and the rest of the Holy Land they are His Regents; elsewhere they are His vassals. Where their dominion is for this life only, Jesus entered upon the full exercise of His royal power only at His Ascension, after He had left this life through His death and Resurrection.

His Kingdom is not of this world, since He does not rule from earth with only the strength of mortal man. He will not allow Himself to be made King by men or even with their help. He rules from the right hand of His Father by means which are primarily spiritual and with the full providential power of God over all creation. He commands rational creatures through the faculties of reason and conscience which He, as their Creator, has given them, and by divine revelation by which He makes known Himself and the rule of life which must be followed by all who would enter eternal beatitude.

His Kingdom is not of this world, since His royal power does not come to Him from the grant of any earthly prince, nor from the strength of military force, nor by revolution, nor by popular acclamation or recognition. It comes to Him only from His Father and belongs to Him by right and by nature, for He is the only-begotten Son and Word of God. Though some earthly rulers - notably the Emperors of China and Japan - have dared to assume the title of Son of Heaven, it is not to them, but to Christ alone, that this dignity belongs.

He is uncreated, of one Being with God. Through Him all things were created, and nothing has ever come into existence except through Him. Jesus Christ is truly God, and has from eternity all that belongs to His Father.

As God He is the One from whom is all authority. As Man He is the One to whom has been given all authority in heaven and on earth, including the power to raise up nations and cast them down. No matter how rebellious and defiant His creatures may be, His authority and power over them cannot be taken away or diminished. He has all the power He needs to vindicate it, for He is Judge of angels and of the living and the dead. None can escape His judgement and all must face it at death, to render an account to Him of all their deeds done in this life. This authority is given to Him as Man by direct conferral from God, and it belongs to Him as Universal Sovereign and as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. These titles are given to Him solely for the glorification of Almighty God and of Christ Himself for His own sake, so that all peoples, nations and languages must serve Him.
