The Holy Imperial Crown of Christ the King

"Salvation and power and empire for ever have been won by our God, and all authority for his Christ." (Revelation 12:10a)

The Holy Imperial Crown of Christ the King is the Crown which represents the authority given to Him over all things in heaven and on earth, and which could only ever be given to the Incarnate God. Though the Crown is open (and therefore Royal) it is called "Imperial" because Jesus is, as to jurisdiction, a King of imperial rank. This is to say that He is a Sovereign, subject to no other authority.

The basis of His authority, as given to Him in His Sacred Humanity, is His Divinity together with His conquest of sin, death and Satan by His Blood, signified by the incorporation in the gold Crown of iron circlets of thorns. Seven half-arches converge on an orb supporting a cross, and the fact that they slope upwards qualifies the Crown as a Crown of State, as distinct from a Coronation Crown. The circlets of thorns themselves serve as the Coronation Crown, which Jesus chose to wear as He willingly submitted to His Passion and Crucifixion for the salvation of sinners.

This Crown has deliberately been designed to be not as splendid to the human eye as the Crowns of earthly Kings. Its true magnificence is a divine mystery hidden in God, but knowable only through faith and symbolised by the Crown of Thorns of base metal, sanctified and given immense value by the fact that they were once in contact with the Sacred Head of Jesus and stained with His Precious Blood.

The Priesthood of Christ is signified by the figures of two Cherubim in relief on the front of the Crown, facing one another with outstretched wings as did the Cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant. It is also signified by the two blue infulae (ribbons) which trail from the back of the Crown when worn. These resemble those found on a Bishop's mitre and on an Emperor's Crown. They are not visible here, but can be seen on the Crown ensigning the Eagle on the Imperial Banners.
